Glenda Bona was named a University of Nevada Cooperative Extension Master Gardener Volunteer of the Year. In 2016, Bona volunteered 884 hours on the Herb Garden. Ralph Sgamma received the Silver Phone Award for volunteering the most number of hours answering phone call questions at the help desk.

Ronald McDonald House Charities, local McDonald’s owner/operators and community partners awarded $369,000 in scholarships to a record 269 students — 150 high schools seniors and 119 past alumni recipients.

USA Dawgs donated 7,500 pairs of shoes to Project 150. In addition, Vegas Valley Logistics donated a 53-foot trailer to assist with storage and delivery of the shoes.

Nearly $40,000 was raised at the Take Steps Community Walk for the Las Vegas chapter of the nonprofit Crohn’s & Colitis Foundation at the Mountain’s Edge community‘s Exploration Park. In addition, Avery Link, 17, was recognized as the 2017 Take Steps Honored Hero for her efforts to generate awareness and educate others about inflammatory bowel diseases and where to get help.

The Governors Highway Safety Association and the National Road Safety Foundation awarded $15,000 to Nevada to support drowsy-driving prevention efforts.

Helix Nevada raised $9,000 at a golf tournament. The money went to Home 4 Spot, Down Syndrome of Southern Nevada and 22 Warriors.

The Henderson Chamber of Commerce Foundation’s Leadership Henderson program donated more than $12,000 to the Nevada Blind Children’s Foundation.

The Smith Center for the Performing Arts received a $100,000 grant from the national William Randolph Hearst Foundation. It is helping the Smith Center’s Southern Nevada Wolf Trap Early Learning Through the Arts program. Under this school-readiness program, the Smith Center partners professional teaching artists with local preschool teachers for in-classroom residencies.

In a partnership with North Las Vegas, Square Panda donated its multisensory phonics learning systems to The Shade Tree.

The Rogers Foundation awarded $240,600 to three local programs: Boys Town Nevada received $100,000, Del Sol Academy of the Performing Arts received $40,600 and Reading Rangers received $100,000.

Colliers International – Las Vegas’ Links for Life Charity Golf Tournament raised more than $115,000 for various children’s charities in Southern Nevada. Sponsors included: Majestic Realty, Panattoni, Remington Nevada, Swenson, First American Title Co., Fidelity National Title Group, Integrated Landscape Management, Nevada Title Co., Gaudin Porsche of Las Vegas, Findlay Automotive Group, MCA Realty, The Industrial Team of De Lew & Pancirov, Meadows Bank, Vegas Inc, Burke Construction Group, Nevada General Construction, Ethos Three Architecture, Denali Builders, Prologis, the Liquor Outlet, Burnett Haase Construction, Centra, Saber Security, Brandise Construction Co., the Ogden Foundation, SignCo Digital Color Imaging, Worthe Hanson & Worthe and Tradewinds Construction.

The Vegas Roots Community Garden received $10,000 grant from the Darden Foundation, the charitable arm of Bahama Breeze’s parent company, Darden Restaurants.

Nevada Women’s Philanthropy gave $405,000 to U.S Vets–Las Vegas to upgrade security and provide more assistance at its residential facility. The organization also gave $30,000 to The Shade Tree shelter.

Impact Las Vegas gave $24,0000 to Future Smiles, a nonprofit group that helps children get dental care. The money will be used for Save Our Smiles, which offers dental sealant and follow-up care at Hollingworth, Martinez and Tate elementary schools.

Future Smiles and Cirque du Soleil donated funds to purchase 50 caps and gowns, as well as 50 yearbooks, for Ed W. Clark High School graduating seniors.

Sands Cares raised more than $500,000 for the Marty Hennessy Inspiring Children Foundation at a charity event.

The Foundation Assisting Seniors raised more than $8,500 at a benefit concert.

The Blue Man Group raised more than $12,500 for the Grant a Gift Autism Foundation.

Bank of America awarded $402,500 in economic mobility grants to 41 nonprofits working to increase basic needs, education and workforce development opportunities in Southern Nevada. Organizations receiving grants include: After-School All-Stars Las Vegas; Boys & Girls Club of Southern Nevada; Candlelighters Childhood Cancer Foundation of Nevada; Clark County Public Education Foundation; Communities in Schools of Nevada; Discovery Children’s Museum; Dress for Success Southern Nevada; Father Flanagan’s Boys’ Home; First Nevada; Foundation for an Independent Tomorrow; Fulfillment Fund; Future Smiles; Global Charity Foundation; Goodie Two Shoes Foundation; Goodwill of Southern Nevada; HELP of Southern Nevada; Junior Achievement of Southern Nevada; Las Vegas Rescue Mission; Lutheran Social Services; Make-A-Wish; Miracle Flights; Nevada Business Opportunity Fund; Nevada Homeless Alliance; NV Paralyzed Veterans of America; Nevada Partnership for Homeless Youths; Nevada Public Radio; Operation Homefront; Opportunity Village; Safe Nest; Service Corps of Retired Executives; Southern Nevada Public Television; Spread the Word Nevada; St. Rose Dominican Health Foundation; St. Jude’s Ranch for Children; Summer Business Institute; Teach for America; Tech Impact; the Ogden Foundation; Shade Tree; Three Square Food Bank; and YMCA of Southern Nevada.

Workforce Connections awarded $14,337,000 in federal funds from the Workforce Innovation and Opportunity Act to 10 local agencies for the 2017-18 fiscal year: Foundation for an Independent Tomorrow ($800,000), Goodwill of Southern Nevada ($1.8 million), HELP of Southern Nevada (2.3 million), HOPE for Prisoners ($600,000), Lincoln County Grants Administration ($362,000), Nevada Partners Inc. ($2.5 million), Nye Communities Coalition ($975,000), Southern Nevada Regional Housing Authority ($1 million), Res Care ($3 million) and KRA Corp. ($1 million).

Miracle Flights raised $50,000 at Swings for Wings, presented by Bank of Nevada. The funds help critically ill children in need of medical care far from home.

The Las Vegas office of CBRE, in conjunction with CBRE Cares, donated $20,441 to After-School All-Stars Las Vegas.

Nevada State Bank honored the following for their volunteer efforts to teach financial concepts to students and groups such as Junior Achievement of Southern Nevada, The Shade Tree, Habitual Offender Prevention and Education Court, Youth Offender Court and the Girl Scouts of Southern Nevada: Christopher Berry, Business Opportunity and Workforce Development; Patricia Graves, Clark High School Academy of Finance; Talissa Tillman, Girl Scouts; Jacquelyn Trevena, Junior Achievement of Southern Nevada; Lonnie Noble, The Shade Tree; Charla Jones, Teach Children to Save; Norene Rajsich, Youth Offender Court; and Donna Haberman, coordination of Junior Achievement volunteers.

• Cristian Cruz Padilla and Joselyn Jarquin-Ortez, students at Sunrise Mountain High School, were presented with $2,500 scholarships from the Bennett Family Foundation.
